Tongio Station - another chapter in time

In a tightly held farming areas, rarely does the opportunity arise to purchase property with significant historic ties to early settlement, and of an era gone by, such as what is the case with "Tongio Station".
History explains that unlike most exploration in Australia that went inland from sea, that in fact the East Gippsland areas of Benambra, Omeo, Tongio and Ensay, were first explored and settled by Europeans who came overland from the Manaro regions and who were not explorers in the sense, but stockman looking to expand their range. James Macfarlane first took on the Australian Alps and arrived in Benambra of 1834 and returned in 1935 with MacKillop and Livingston. In 1936 they brought cattle back and formed Gippsland's first squatting run and was soon followed by other cattlemen from the Monaro, John Pendergast, John Hyland and two Buckleys, Edmund and his stepson Patrick, with Edmund moving to Tongio Munjie and Ensay which is arguably where Tongio Station was founded 1836. History notes that the first township of Tongio Munjie was settled by Codie Buckley in 1839, with documented evidence of a liquor license granted to a Allan Burn in 1858.
Tongio Stations original vast squatting run was acquired by the state and apportioned as part of the soldier settlement during that time. Today the existing homestead has stood for over 100 years with a post card photo of it in the state library circa 1915. The story is told of that the original homestead had burnt down, and there is evidence of the original chimney next to the home. Approximately 800 acres in total area the property is made up of approx. 100 acres of river flats, balance being undulating hill country rising to steeper tops, and with over two kilometers frontage to the Tambo River and has a 37 mega litres of take and use irrigation licence. The property is suitable for both sheep and cattle, with cattle most recently occupying the property.
Locally "Tongio Station" has been referred to as "Bocks" who have been in ownership of the property for over the last 60 years and was home to the 10 surviving siblings.
